Auto detect added folders/apps

Due to having more than one installation of SyMenu, I find it sometimes necessary to copy/move from one to another. It would be of great help to avoid having to redownload then move settings or copy the apps folder and edit config. My proposal is to simply have SyMenu auto detect if apps have been added to any of it's folders and add the entry(ies) to the menu uncategorised.
I have to admit, this is one feature I do like about PA.com menu. It makes reorganisation or even creating new menus for others a breeze. You can just copy your existing app folders to the new menu and PA.com menu just knows they're there and are therefore available within. No Config necessary, other than renaming or recategorising if desired.

A much better explanation than my own, thank you. And thank you to you too lupusbalo for your help, but not really what I'm looking for.
I have to admit I didn't think about the different folder structures causing an issue. As it's going to cause you too much work then don't worry about it. I assumed it would be a matter of simply doing a recheck as it is when checking for redundant links.
Never mind, thanks for the explanation. |

I did the same thing. Eventually though, I settled for single categories for my main menu with most used apps. Categories with simple names audio, maintenance, media, etc, and with my menu that contains all apps, I have sub categories.
For me personally, this has never needed to be superceded as it works and is very effective. edited by sl23 on 21/06/2017 |

Extension Manager - Bug?

I've been having some issues for some time, but they have been intermittent. I thought it was either windows 10 or my system playing up. I reinstalled windows a while ago and the problem persisted.
Essentially here is what happens: 1. I was clicking on a JPG file and the windows associated program (XlideIt, installed in SyMenu) was opening and after appearing would then close. 2. Then I noticed this would happen with PDF files too. 3. Again, it started happening with RAR files. but with this I would R-click to archive a PDF file and it would open WinRAR, close it as soon as it had opened, then open Foxit!!!
A system Restart would solve the issue, hence I thought something was wrong with my system. But... yesterday, it occurred to me that it was fine one minute then the next it was playing up. So I thought, what had changed? I'd opened E:/SyMenu to access an app not on my main used D:/SyMenu. As this seems to only affect certain file types I then tried Disable Extension Manager from the E:/SyMenu. Lo and behold, it worked! All these months I was plagued by this issue and it was SyMenu's Extension Manager causing the problem!
I also have the Extension Manager active on the D:/SyMenu so perhaps it's a conflict? One thing I'm unsure of, when using this Extension Manager, does it simply open files activated via SyMenu or is it meant to work system-wide? For example, should I be able to click on a PDF in Cubic Explorer and it opens the app specified in SyMenu's Extension Manager? Or does it only work if the file has a SyItem and is opened within SyMenu?
It would be a great addition if full on system-wide file associations were possible via SyMenu, LiberKey achieved this, but I found it a bit complex As it was only a short lived thing I couldn't be bothered to figure it out!
Thanks |

Thanks for the reply. I understand all your points and pretty much guessed what your reply would be, I have indeed disabled the second EM.
However, my main reason for portable file associations is twofold: 1. Associating around 100 file types is a pain when reinstalling windows. 2. It helps when using the menu on another PC.
I reinstall windows around once a year, so it's very useful to have portable file associations, amd a pain in the ass not having it! PortableFileAssociator was absolutely perfect for my needs but no longer works since MS have changed things in windows 10!
With all these portable apps around you think portable file association would be a much needed thing!
Oh well, thanks anyway Gian. edited by sl23 on 26/06/2017 |

Just a thought, is it worth adding a safeguard on this?
If you launch a second menu perhaps it should check for am existing instance and auto disable the EM. What do you think?
At least that way it wouldn't produce unwanted results such as I had above. |

The reason I have two identical menus, almost identical, is that one contains all possible required apps with a few extras, plus folders and install files for some apps.
My regular menu is a streamlined version for my use only and is fixed. The 'full' version is also used for usage as a portable system and so is occasionally used for sorting other people's PC out or passing on apps etc. Here is where the same file associations become useful.
Here is where the trouble can also start. As with my problem above, it is very feasible that symenu could be on a friends laptop. Which they then ask me to look at for one reason or another, so I take my hard drive with my full symenu round, start it up and find conflicts with associations. Do you see the problem?
I suppose it's maybe rare, but very real.
I know what you're saying about windows and it's file associations though, I spent many days trying to find ways around it, looking for apps or registry hacks in the hope something would work.
I'd be happy with a reg file that I could edit and simply run when reinstalling windows or adding new entries!
Doesn't seem to be anything like that that works though! Bloody Microsoft are a pain in the ass!!!
Wasn't happy with PEW, PFA was dead long before win10.
Thanks anyway Gian |

Of course...
Thank you
EDIT: Not too sure why you added the "Folder Launcher" idea, or it's practical use over simply using the main menu? What were your reasons? Seems to work ok though. A minor point, regarding the tooltip... for ease of reading, create a second line halfway. When text is written without line breaks it can reduce continuity of flow a bit.
One thing I hate about some websites and forums is the long straight sentences with no breaks! I wish they used columns. Imagine reading a newspaper or magazine that didn't use columns! They're used for a reason, to facilitate the flow of reading. Anyway, rant over
Will that hidden option become a err... non hidden option in the Options form at some point? edited by sl23 on 28/06/2017 |

Great idea VVV! Thanks for explaining Gian, just wondered where the idea popped up from and it's purpose. I see how it can be useful now. Perhaps this is a long shot, maybe you don't want to go in this direction, but... Would it be possible and more useful to to turn this window, as an option maybe, into a simple dock? That way it could be placed on the task bar where it doesn't intrude. I realise this is covering new, possibly unwanted territory, but would definitely be a great improvement.
Especially if we could have similar abilities to existing docks such as: 1. Drag n drop 2. Not just the specified folder and it's content but any SyItem contained anywhere in the menu. 3. Dock to screen edges and auto hide 4. Basic resizing of icons and only showing icons
Sorry if I'm putting too much on you, I just thought I'd put the idea there for your perusal, it may be more useful and less obtrusive using a dock instead of a window. Thank you so much for your hard work, as ever, you've done a fantastic job!!! edited by sl23 on 30/06/2017 |

Sorry for my poor explanation! To be honest, either sounds good
From my personal experience, I believe a taskbar dock is best. It is always accessible and doesn't hide anything if kept on top. But, a normal dock, like rocket dock, would be the best option as it would then be able to have the option to be placed over the taskbar, yet placed anywhere to suit other users.
So, are you actually considering this? or just gauging opinion. It would be a great advantage to have this ability. No other menu or dock has the two features combined, none that I know of and believe me, I've searched extensively for all various menus and dock systems for years.
Hope I haven't made things more difficult for you suggesting this Gian, I know you're a busy guy! |

Er... yeah I suppose that's how it works? I think you'd have a better idea than me I don't expect a Rocket Dock reproduction, just a basic line of icons that you can apply the SyConfig/EnvVar's to. But something that can be docked wherever you want/need to be more productive.
If possible, maybe at a later date, add the containers, or even a completely separate config? Or have the same list but add an option to hide any specific item on the dock. Or perhaps the other way around... Show on dock?
Anything that saves time is surely a bonus!
Only 870!!! I thought mine was a large collection at 588! That's including some windows apps, some install files and bookmarked folders though.
Thank you so much for your work, this is going to be fantastic!!! |

Hi and welcome.
I suggest you create categories for your apps to reduce the vertical height and therefore eliminate scrolling. If you do not want this, then use a batch file, NirCmd or a Task Manager to close SyMenu. I have around 600 apps and shortcuts and suffer no issues. I set them up into 15 Main categories each with subcategories, this is far easier than having one long list of apps to scroll through!
Can't help with your other question I'm afraid! I don't fully understand your situation. Have you used an installer to install SyMenu? If so, maybe that's your problem? By the sounds of it, you've installed to a removable device. SyMenu is portable and using the zip package is probably the best way forward. Having said that, I've never used the installer so don't know what effect this would have on SyMenu. |
