During Green Blinking Light, SyMenu Unresponsive

For the last week or two I have been getting this non responsive situation with a green blinking light. I have done nothing different than usual. SyMenu has always been installed to E: so it's strange it should start happening now. The other odd thing is that the D: install, my most used and using the latest beta, is fine, never an issue. I am starting the E: SyMenu via a shortcut from the D: SyMenu shortcut, and the E: version starts but keeps flashing no matter how long it's left to load. D:\SyMenu version = 5.10.6254 E:\SyMenu version = 5.10.6254 |

Any chance of being able to save the Column sizes? Or, if easier, reduce the sizes of Released on, Version and Size columns so that Name and Category can show more info please. Currently they are all the same width which is wasting space in some columns while restricting for others.
Also, when updating apps there's a window showing the current progress, would you be able to change this so all apps that were highlighted are listed and have a progress bar for each. LiberKey updater is a perfect example of this. It shows a progress bar for each app and within each bar are the details of each app to be installed or updated.

Thank you for explaining. The trouble is that for a users point of view it's too easy to request new things without understand your side. I respect you're decision and completely understand |

Adding PortableApps.com Menu to SyMenu

I tend to use the symenu version of an app over PA.com except when the app is not fully stealth. Examples of this are audacity, inkscape, autoruns. For these and few others I prefer stealth.
Though I have managed to figure out some basics of environment variables to keep my system folders cleaner.
It's a shame symenu can't do the same for the registry, but then that's what X-launcher and yap are for. Though to be honest I don't go that far. If an app relies too heavily on registry I abandon it in favour of something portable, unless not possible. One such example is IObit Driver Booster. Few other apps are as good, easy and portable as this. But I keep a look out... |

Wow!! That looks neater :-)
- May I suggest that you remove the Exit button for more space? Why exactly does this exist when the window has a close button? Is there a real world difference to the user?
- Also, this implementation is perfect, apart from the list height when display app details. Can you please expand the height of the entire window to allow more of the list to be displayed please? Currently I find it too small and your proposal reduces the current state!!
Just checked and the current window size can be adjusted and remembered. If that stays, then this request is unnecessary.
- Another suggestion, make the Empty Trash and Update apps real buttons instead of link lookalikes. And place those on the right hand side one above the other inline with the search functions and other buttons. These are important buttons, so best kept at the top. Removal of the exit button would help space-wise with this.
The Update app definitions button could simply be renamed to Update Apps or Update Check.
- Not sure if it's better, but maybe remove the context menu and have all those options as small square buttons underneath the app info section on right? Then they can be seen. What do you think about this?
- If you merge everything to a single suite, does that affect our own personal suites? What is meant by "unable to scan more than 1000 items, search is only chance to find something"? What is scan, when is it performed?
Also, might be worth adding a column to the SPS Manager to allow sorting by developer?
- Oh, and a minor point, the two field boxes for App Publisher and Contact Reviewer aren't the same width, a little adjustment to make the latter wider would be better.
I'm shocked!!! I didn't even know you added a context menu to the SPS Manager!!! When did you add that? Thank you Gian, hope I influenced you a little here ;-) edited by sl23 on 29/03/2017 |

Re: Exit button, Ok I understand that you want to keep it, I don't understand why when a window has a close button. Is there a difference? Why is it necessary to have an exit and a close button? Is it an accessibility issue? How about adding it to the context menu? If not, how about reducing it's height?
Re: Update Apps, I see your point here, but to most users I think they won't care about the specifics. At the end of the day, this button checks for updates. I was simply trying to reduce the text to allow for a narrower button
Re: Sorting, Search by dev!! AARRGGHH!!! I hate search! Seriously though, the main reason is that it's slower. If there was a dev column you simply click it and you can find all nirsoft apps. But to find them with search means clicking search field, checking the right boxes are checked above it, typing in 'nirsoft' and click search button. Then you only have the nirsoft apps displayed, nothing else. So, to see other apps means deleting search field and clicking search again. It's all a bit convoluted! A dev column makes it much easier and faster in the long run.
I thank you for reading and taking note of my suggestions, I have yours too, I don't mean to be picky with your reasoning, just trying to look at things from a practical point of view.
Look forward to the new and improved SPS Manager edited by sl23 on 30/03/2017 |

Ah, so it is to do with accessibility then? OK that's fair enough. I always wondered why there are two ways to close apps.
I'm still a bit dubious over this search thing, but, I'm sure I can live with it!
Thanks for explaining |

I've been tinkering with this to try and make it portable, currently it saves it's settings here: C:\Users\Public\Documents
Is there anyway of using the EnvVar's to save/use the data in the apps folder as the AppData=.\AppData command does?
Thanks
EDIT: I found the wiki page on envvar's and tried numerous combinations of these: %SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Documents=.\User\PublicDocs %PUBLIC%\Documents=.\User\PublicDocs
None of these worked. Is it actually possible to do this? Am I just missing something? Am I babrking up the wrong tree? Am I even in the right forest?

Since the program is probably searching for the %PUBLIC% environment variable you should try with this: PUBLIC=.\User This and several variations have been tested.
Gianluca wrote:
If you redefine the %PUBLIC%\Documents SyMenu will try to replace the entire string as it is an environment variable. So it search for %%PUBLIC%\Documents% instead. Since this variable doesn't exists SyMenu creates a new variable and doesn't replace the old one. Not too sure I understand what you mean? Gianluca wrote:
Remember to insert the environment variable name without the % symbol. I tried that too, with and without, I've tried variations with %, without %, different path names, due to the folder being named as Public\Public Documents but properties showing it just as Public\Documents??? Gianluca wrote:
I think it's impossible to convince the program to write its files inside a folder called PublicDocs if it is searching for a folder called Documents. But anyway it's not a problem if this folder is inside the program root. Hmm, this I'm not sure I agree with. For example, you have stated that it's looking for 'Documents' and above suggest to try PUBLIC=.\User, isn't that a completely different name? Surely the folder name is unimportant if the path to it is specified, in this case PublicDocs? This has been my strategy for all apps and it is working so far Though perhaps it is because I have placed all adjustments inside the Apps directory?
Gianluca wrote:
I suggest you to use the program RapidEE (available on the SyMenu Suite) to test your redefinition attempts. My procedure: - insert the new variable in the RapidEE through SyMenu configuration - execute the program and read the result of your redefinition. I was just checking this app out actually! Though I have no idea of it's abilities, dangers or uses! So, I decided to leave it.
But using the above variables, shouldn't that be enough to specify that SyMenu should make the app use the folder specified for it's data? The actual full path is: C:\Users\Public\Documents\WinStep
But the if you got to the Public folder you will see that all public folders have the name 'Public ' in front of them? Why doesn't this show up on the properties tab? Which name should be used?
Thanks |

There is no automatic emptying of the trash? Sounds like a good idea though? Maybe when it reaches a user specified limit? Rather than just allowing it to fill your hard drive! :-) |

When adding a Label the menu becomes wider than the longest named SyItem. Not sure if it's a standard length or relative to the longest name. Probably the former. But would be grateful for a fix please
I decided to use a second separator anyway, so not an issue now, but I don't understand why a blank label has a set width? Is there a reason for it? edited by sl23 on 17/04/2017 |
