Something messed up with the new update. Gave up trying to fix it so, deleted the whole SyMenu folder and re-downloaded to start over. Now it will not create the three program suites and just puts everything into one long list of programs. I do know about the little button to put them all into folders by category but they do NOT go into folders for respective suites. |

I removed the 3rd and 4th buttons that were able to separate the new installed programs by suites so now you have only two buttons: - the first puts everything on the root; - the second puts everything inside folders named accordingly to the programs categories.
Why this breaking change? Because in a while the three native suites become one single suite. So NirSoft and Sysinternals will be added to the SyMenu suite. You'll be able to create your own custom suites as you do today and probably we'll have a feature to add thirty party suites.
Anyway, when SyMenu puts the programs inside certain logical folders, you are free to re-organize your menu as you like. I strongly suggest to do that because the organization based on native category is not the best organization for everyone. You and only you know how your programs must be organized. Well, I'm glad I had a backup copy of the previous version. I will be using that and not updating! I'm just sort of irked that I spent so much time trying to "fix" something that could no longer be done and there was no logical reason why. I realize the original organization may not be optimal for everyone but, it at least helps to start sorting. As for combining SyMenu, NirSoft and Sysinternals all into one suite - well, I'll stay apprised of future development and see how it goes. Overall I do like this program. I'm just wary of these changes. |

Hello... I did send you an email containing the error I received on auto update. (can paste again here if you wish). If I manually download the new version (zip format) and overwrite the older version, will it still retain my current "sort configuration" ? including the SyMenu, NirSoft and Sysinternals folders? |

OK. Thanx. You've now answered my next question - before I asked it! LOL. But, what I'm asking here is the SyMenu app itself. If I manually download the new version 6.08 (zip format) and overwrite the older version 6.07, will it still retain my current "sort configuration" of all the various portable apps? including the SyMenu, NirSoft and Sysinternals folders? What I don't want to end up with is a long list of 500+ folders that I need to manually sort out. This seems to be what I was facing yesterday when I deleted (actually just renamed) the old 6.07 folder, then tried to rebuild using the new 6.08. I tried importing from the old 6.07 folder but, could not maintain any kind of sort preferences. This is what prompted me to inquire here in the forum. Thought there was something simple I was missing but, now find out it is by design?? |

Was the automatic update that messed things up. SyMenu would not even start after the update. Will do it manually and let you know. Thanks. Attaching RAR of error message. The site doesn't like something in the message code so it won't let me just paste it here..

Updated manually and everything seems okay. Also updated my current apps. If I'm understanding the new process correctly, if I choose to install any NEW apps, they will be put into the root and I will then need to put them where I want them? |

Just allowed SyMenu to update to v6.16 - Now clicking "Get New Apps" does nothing. I do not get the Manage SPS Apps screen. Was able to revert to previous version from USB stick and is now working again. OS is Windows7. |

Automatic update still causing problem. Was able to update manually by downloading the zip and replacing only the updated files. I can now get the "Manage SPS Apps screen" but my ability to select various categories is missing. See screenshot. |

Just updated to new v8.00.874 and again the auto-update process borked my setup. SyMenu app would not even start. Downloaded the zip package and over-wrote new/changed files. The program will now start but, it does not recognize any of my previous apps; instead it moves them all into the trash folder. I am able to download new apps but how can I save the apps I already have? (I do have backup of previous setup. But SyMenu will not start from this backup copy.) I would also want to save the previous folder structure layout. |

Followed your directions but still have problems. The Program Files folder is the problem. As I mentioned in my original post, when I start SyMenu it does not see any of my old apps. Instead, it moved them all into the trash folder where it renames them with the date and time. (20231206-06.25.05.AllDup_sps). I can replace to Programs File folder from my backup but, it just trashes them again. I did install one new app and it only sees this one but trashes all the others. The icon folder is unaffected. Plugin and Profiles folders are virtually empty. I don't really want to re-download 135 apps and then have to re-organize them again into the folder structure. Both SyMenu Suite and NirSoft Suite have been borked.
the original auto-update failed. It created a folder in the root directory called ~Update. But the update process did not happen and SyMenu would not run. And BTW this was v8.00.8738 I then went to the website to download the zip and the version was already changed to 8.00.874. I simply over-wrote new/changed files and starting SyMenu gives the problem outlined above.

Hi sl23, the About windows should close clicking outside of it. Otherwise it's a bug.
Yeah, the only way to close it is click the version number which also takes you to the home page. |

Hard to know what happened now but, I guess the SyMenuItem.zip file got changed too. Maybe the botched auto-update - maybe something I did - I don't know. I had backed up the SyMenu directory after the auto updated application refused to start. Anyway, I basically started anew. I used my backup copy to itemize all the apps I had before and re-downloaded them. SyMenu is now working the way I want it. Thanks for your help. |

I'm very sorry to hear that because you've been unlucky twice.
First because your AV caused this mess. In fact the update process doesn't touch the Config folder and it's impossible SyMenu changed it by itself. What has happened is that probably the AV prevented SyMenu from accessing the ProgramFiles folder, as a consequence SyMenu thought you had no programs configured, trashed all the files, and saved an empty configuration file.
The second misfortune is you had not activated the backup of configuration files (Options - General - Backup configuration files) otherwise you could have taken one of the older files.
OK, so bottom line - was something I did do (or should have done) - ie. "Backup configuration files". LOL Won't make that mistake again. I do very much like your app. As for AV, this is probably not the right forum to inquire for recommendations to replace Kaspersky? |

I usually use very complex passwords and I do not remember them and if it asks me again, I would need to access the password manager and that would already bother me. Simple way to create and *remember* long, unique and secure passwords. WEBSITEpwd=4.12345 GOOGLEpwd=4.12345 SYMENUpwd=4.12345 UGMFREEpwd=4.12345 The website name in ALL CAPS is what makes it unique. What comes after is a mix of lower case, special characters, and numbers that can be repeated indefinitely that only you know. |
