Just updated to new v8.00.874 and again the auto-update process borked my setup. SyMenu app would not even start. Downloaded the zip package and over-wrote new/changed files. The program will now start but, it does not recognize any of my previous apps; instead it moves them all into the trash folder. I am able to download new apps but how can I save the apps I already have? (I do have backup of previous setup. But SyMenu will not start from this backup copy.) I would also want to save the previous folder structure layout.

Well your misadventure allows me to explain how to manually update SyMenu.
We have two scenarios:
- manual update from 7.00 to 8.00;
- manual update from 8.xx to whatever newer.
Since all the SyMenu versions are compatible with each other, it's easy to succeed in both scenarios. Let's start.
Rule 1 of SyMenu manual update: do not talk about SyMenu manual update... err... that was another thing...
Re-start.
Rule 1 Do not touch Config and ProgramFiles folders. Never! Do not touch Icons, Plugin, and Profiles folder too, but this is not a strict rule.
Rule 2 Delete all files and folders from the SyMenu main folder except the folders from Rule 1.
Rule 3 Unzip the downloaded SyMenu package into the SyMenu main folder. You have to unzip the package content and get a SyMenu.exe file inside the root folder
Rule 4 Grab a coffee and relax, you've finished.
If SyMenu doesn't work there's a chance you are upgrading from 7.00 to 8.00 and have some plugins installed. If it's your case, delete the Plugin folder and execute SyMenu again.

Followed your directions but still have problems. The Program Files folder is the problem. As I mentioned in my original post, when I start SyMenu it does not see any of my old apps. Instead, it moved them all into the trash folder where it renames them with the date and time. (20231206-06.25.05.AllDup_sps). I can replace to Programs File folder from my backup but, it just trashes them again. I did install one new app and it only sees this one but trashes all the others. The icon folder is unaffected. Plugin and Profiles folders are virtually empty. I don't really want to re-download 135 apps and then have to re-organize them again into the folder structure. Both SyMenu Suite and NirSoft Suite have been borked.
the original auto-update failed. It created a folder in the root directory called ~Update. But the update process did not happen and SyMenu would not run. And BTW this was v8.00.8738 I then went to the website to download the zip and the version was already changed to 8.00.874. I simply over-wrote new/changed files and starting SyMenu gives the problem outlined above.

Indeed the problem is not the ProgramFiles folder. SyMenu trashes all the programs in the SPSSuite\SyMenuSuite\ folder because it doesn't find the right configuration for those programs. Precisely the Config\SyMenuItem.zip file doesn't contain a good configuration for all the programs available inside the SPSSuite\SyMenuSuite.
My advice for you: restore your backup for the ProgramFiles folder AND the backup for the SyMenuItem.zip file otherwise it doesn't work. If you follow my instruction and again finish with all your program trashed it is because of the wrong SyMenuItem.zip file, not because the content of ProgramFiles.
Plus the problem with the automatic update comes from your AV. Try to read the history of detection and you'll find something tied with SyMenu for sure. In fact if you find the ~Update folder it means the download has happened, the unzipping has succeeded too, but the overwrite of the old installation has been blocked by your AV that thinks it's a really dangerous activity.

Hard to know what happened now but, I guess the SyMenuItem.zip file got changed too. Maybe the botched auto-update - maybe something I did - I don't know. I had backed up the SyMenu directory after the auto updated application refused to start. Anyway, I basically started anew. I used my backup copy to itemize all the apps I had before and re-downloaded them. SyMenu is now working the way I want it. Thanks for your help.

I'm very sorry to hear that because you've been unlucky twice.
First because your AV caused this mess. In fact the update process doesn't touch the Config folder and it's impossible SyMenu changed it by itself. What has happened is that probably the AV prevented SyMenu from accessing the ProgramFiles folder, as a consequence SyMenu thought you had no programs configured, trashed all the files, and saved an empty configuration file.
The second misfortune is you had not activated the backup of configuration files (Options - General - Backup configuration files) otherwise you could have taken one of the older files.

OK, so bottom line - was something I did do (or should have done) - ie. "Backup configuration files". LOL Won't make that mistake again. I do very much like your app. As for AV, this is probably not the right forum to inquire for recommendations to replace Kaspersky?

I recommend you to report any false positive you get on your AV and stay with it because every AV has this kind of issues sometimes.
