Well to implement such a complex feature I need to know how many users need this. Why don't you map the network drive? |

SyMenu from a network drive

Hello to all.
Occasionally someone ask to me why SyMenu doesn't work on the network paths. Well actually it works if you map the network location as a network drive but the request is slightly different.
The response will be surprising: SyMenu works quite well over network paths but this feature is not well tested and I closed it.
By Now the program is becoming huge and if I open this feature it will be quite impossible for me to test it all so you'll have a buggy SyMenu... well it is not our style isn't it? Anyway I could create a special beta version that is able to work over the network and I could distribute it to the people that want to test it. In change I would like some regular bug reports so I will be able to fix every problem and we can reach a final version within the end of 2014.
What do you think about that? If someone would like to offer himself for this experiment, in the name of the science, please send to me a private message or contact me through the web site.
Ciao! |

SyMenu crashes when saving the programs list

You are right. The problem originated from the uncorrect definition of the MM version or in the way SyMenu extracts it. Waiting for the next SyMenu version in which I'll solve this bug you can easily workaround the problem, dragging MM on the SyMenu and deleting the uncorrect portion of the version and then saving your SyMenu configuration. |

Hello blackcrack. I don't like very much your proposal. Very often people download beta version of certain programs and don't give any feedback to the dev. I prefer count on few people but these persons have to make a commitment to really do the beta testing. To reply to your second question, no SyMenu doesn't work on Mono because you have to use the particular Mono libraries to manage UI to have a double compatibility and I didn't. Furthermore Mono is useful if you use it on linux system but SyMenu is not completely written in manage code, so that it will remain not-compatible the same. |

Hi Marc! Thank you for your sponsorship!!! I'll surely give an eye to XYplorer even if it seems it doesn't implement a tool for comparing folders and files side by side. It's a must have feature for me and I use Total Commander and Unreal Commander only because they implement that. |

Hello PoWi. Merry Christmas to you and to all SyMenu fans! I would like to announce, as a Christmas gift to everyone, that the new SyMenu version is in testing and I finally implemented the execution counter. The other great feature will be that the new SyMenu will execute from network paths too. Stay tuned for the new version! |

Search window

Well this problem is bigger than you describe and it comes from a mistake I did in designin SyMenu.
I choose to separate the main contextual menu from the search menu. In fact the search menu are a submenu and every action on the main menu force the submenu to close.
In retrospect I should have chosen a different approach including the search bar in the main menu so if you search something the search results overwrite every syitem and if you empty the search bar the syitems will reappear.
Every other solution is a patch but not a definitive solution.
I don't know if it is possible to fix this problem but I should try and maybe during this 2014 a 3.00 version of SyMenu will born!
Stay tuned |

Dear users. The new version is out. Finally SyMenu can be executed from a network path and can execute programs available on a network path. I'm very interested in your feedback on this topic because it has been really complex to implement. I know that several sysadmins use SyMenu and this is a typical feature that you will love so... guys I'm counting on you. |

What do you mean? Can't you navigate between the the menu entries? Are you able to open the submenus or not? Check your antivirus because some users have reported false positive with NOD32 vs. SyMenu. |

New version 2.09

Hello Sir_X.
The SyMenu search feature is a so powerful tool (I guess you've already noticed that) and it allows to search among SyItems, SyMenu tools, on the file system (with the F3 key modifier), on the Start Menu and could find various system utilities available on your OS.
For example try to search for "Program and features" or try "Mouse", "Keyboard", "Services", "Microsoft Management Console" and so on. As a result you'll find useful tools available on your system Control Panel and in other PC locations.
With the last version of SyMenu I linked the search results to the new versions of this particular programs available on Windows 7 and 8. Well this new behavior is quite transparent for a non-sysadmin user but very useful if you know what you are serching for. For example you can open "Credential manager", "Indexing Options", "Biometric Devices" (only if you have some biometric devices on your PC), "BitLocker Drive Encryption" and so on.

I've already projected to stick SyMenu as a start menu replacer but I don't know anything about graphics... so it is really difficult for me to implement a theming system. |

Hi Timrray. This is a fantastic idea. I have your same problem with my configuration too but I haven't thought to this obvious solution. I think that you'll find this feature on the next release ;-) |

Sure. Since now for every item you can choose if you want or not autoexec on start and on quit, I thought to add two textboxes to specify a list of machine names. If for a certain item the autoexec textbox is empty, the autoexec executes always, if you specify a machine name the autoexec executes only on this machine. The machine name list will become an attribute of every single item. |

SyMenu very slow
GianlucaAdministrator
|
Hi. The only case in which SyMenu could be so slow to open, and the fault is of their own, is when you execute SyMenu and it is already running. In that case the new executed SyMenu delegates to the old one to popup and then quits itself. The communication between the two versions could surely be slow.
But I think this is not your problem so I need further details to investigate.
Have you got the same problem with other .NET programs? I ask this because it seems an OS behavior accomplished to save resources. In fact when SyMenu waits for a user request it does nothing and maybe the OS send SyMenu process in an less performance memory area. Someone is thinking to the file page? Well I do, so try to observe if when SyMenu redraws so slowly you see the HD led blinking too. In that case SyMenu arriving from the page file and has to be recover from your HD and not from your RAM memory.
Well your 2GB RAM are enough for an OS like Windows XP but I bet it is not your OS. My advise? From Windows 7 you need a minimum of 4GB RAM and not to run SyMenu... So why does SE-TrayMenu not suffer of the same problem? Because it is written in native code and not in .NET and it manages its memory partially by itself. So is it better than SyMenu? Yes for itself but not for the other programs running in your system. In my humble opinion it is correct that the OS judges and decides what to page in a certain moment and what must reside on the RAM memory because it has a more wide vision of the currently active programs.
Last thing. If you link a shortcut with a program actually SyMenu launches the program without drawing itself, I don't know why I told the contrary to you. But in your case the performance problem won't be resolved because the SyMenu engine has to come back in RAM before launching the program. |

SyMenu suite
GianlucaAdministrator

Dear users. Since February UGMFree and NirSoft have started a great collaboration and the result is that now SyMenu is available with its suite too (see http://www.ugmfree.it/SyMenuSuite.aspx). The NirSoft program collection is a must-have for every sysadmin out there and now you can download all the NirSoft program in a complete and ready to use package already configured with SyMenu.
What do you think about program suites? Do you like them or not? Would you like to have some other SyMenu suites, for example a complete set of programs to accomplish generic tasks? Do you want to have your personal SyMenu program collection publish here? Well discussion is opened. |

SyMenu suite
GianlucaAdministrator
|
Well your proposal is a really good one. If such a feature exists I could publish many suites of different types that users can download and mix in any way they want choosing only certain programs from any suites and composing a customized one. Well the users same could be able to publish their suites.
I think that this kind of program could be better implemented as a plugin more than a native feature of SyMenu. This plugin must have two main capabilities: 1) it must be able to manage the SyItems configuration file (SyMenuItem.zip) that is a simple xml file... very easy to understand and to edit 2) it must be able to manage the file system because it has to copy programs and icon files from source folders to target.
I think that this plugin doesn't need to interact at all with SyMenu so it could be really easy to write in whatever languages.
The question now becomes: is there anybody out there who want to prove his bravery writing this plugin?
I could surely help him/her but I can't write it by myself because I'm really engaged with the new release of SyMenu that will be proper a milestone! Stay tuned! |
