Dear users.
Since February UGMFree and NirSoft have started a great collaboration and the result is that now SyMenu is available with its suite too (see http://www.ugmfree.it/SyMenuSuite.aspx).
The NirSoft program collection is a must-have for every sysadmin out there and now you can download all the NirSoft program in a complete and ready to use package already configured with SyMenu.

What do you think about program suites? Do you like them or not? Would you like to have some other SyMenu suites, for example a complete set of programs to accomplish generic tasks? Do you want to have your personal SyMenu program collection publish here? Well discussion is opened.

I like the idea, but also am wondering if an ability to import/export could accomplish the same thing. For example, if I wanted to share an entry (or group) with someone else, it would be cool if I could export it to a new location with the files and entries in the item itself. If it included all the same fields you have set up for the app (name, description, URL, etc), that would be really cool.

I'm in IT and have a lot of tools that I'd like to be able to share with others easily like this. I've been copying my entire setup for others and removing the stuff I don't want them to have currently. It's a little cumbersome and maybe this could help.

Well your proposal is a really good one.
If such a feature exists I could publish many suites of different types that users can download and mix in any way they want choosing only certain programs from any suites and composing a customized one. Well the users same could be able to publish their suites.

I think that this kind of program could be better implemented as a plugin more than a native feature of SyMenu.
This plugin must have two main capabilities:
1) it must be able to manage the SyItems configuration file (SyMenuItem.zip) that is a simple xml file... very easy to understand and to edit
2) it must be able to manage the file system because it has to copy programs and icon files from source folders to target.

I think that this plugin doesn't need to interact at all with SyMenu so it could be really easy to write in whatever languages.

The question now becomes: is there anybody out there who want to prove his bravery writing this plugin?

I could surely help him/her but I can't write it by myself because I'm really engaged with the new release of SyMenu that will be proper a milestone! Stay tuned!

I also like the integration of suites.
Please have a look at "Windows System Control Center": http://www.kls-soft.com/wscc/index.php

So, basically - and correct me if i'm somehow wrong on this one - said "System Control Center" is nothing but:
* redundant shortcut to SysInternals (which can already be handled perfectly via PortableApps, SyMenu, Keybreeze, Launchy and plenty of other no-install launchers)
* redundant shortcut to NirSoft Utils (same as above)
* set of system icons for ca. 60% of the built-in system settings available normally via built-in GodMode dir
So, out of serial-cat-killer curiosity: apart from CHIP's sign on the website and a "cold war-ish" main color, what does it have that makes it Special instead of "special"?

Well I checked this wscc that I haven't seen before and I think that their choose is interesting and innovative. Essentially you have to download what you need every time you need to use it, unless you uncheck a certain option (Delete downloaded installation files). Than you have a more traditional installation feature.

Personally I find the behavior of this launcher interesting because it essentially explores a cloud based program suite but I don't like a similar approach for SyMenu. Call me traditionalist but I prefer a solution where I have my programs available locally. It's faster, more reliable and I can install whatever I like without depending on the choose of someone else.

Hi Gianluca, sorry but I use wscc and I have all the nirsoft & sysinternals programs in my usb stick or locally on my pc, and I work with them without internet conexion some times, i.e. no cloud.

Sure. In fact I told "unless you uncheck a certain option (Delete downloaded installation files)".
In that case wscc works as a normal offline launcher.
My consideration was only that the cloud approach is really interesting smile

If I may chime in w/ my humble opinion: making huge suites of apps available for users to D/L & install w/o having to do any research on the individual apps in the suite runs the risk of ending up w/ the Hiren's Boot Disk problem - 500+ apps on your disk and you only know what to do w/ 6 of them. IE: More is not Always Better.

My instinct has been to try different utilities to fix my current problem, choose the one that works best for me, learn how to use it & then add it to my toolkit. That keeps my toolkit light enough so that I can still lift it. wink

You are right. This is the problem of the already packed suites.
I think that the best solution to this problem is to offer a huge choice but to leave the user the chance to install only the tools he considers useful enough.

In other words the solution is to offer a feature that guide the user like a smartphone app store.

Well since it's quite the right time I can informally announce here that the project I followed in this last months is exactly the one I described here: a sort of app store for SyMenu Applause
In the next weeks I will open a new forum on this topic but if anyone wants to start helping in build the SyMenu suite immediately let me know with a private message or a mail. Enable your favorite program for the suite it's a really easy process and takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Let me know.

Really interesting! I'm looking forward to that new "feature". smile
