My SyMenu "wish list"

|
Well I would like to open an entire new thread regarding the search for SPS apps.
My idea is to merge the three official suites in a single one, the SyMenu suite, and create a smarter search to find items.
For example to search the NirSoft tools you should write something like: PUB:Nirsoft instead of selecting the Publisher checkbox on the NirSoft tab.
This new way will allow you to combine every search entry with any other.
For example you'll be able to make a search that today is impossible:
STAT:Added STAT:Update Today you can only filter for Added or for Update.
Naturally you can combine any search filter with any other.
For example: "text CAT:editor CAT:graphic STAT:New" which means: search in name and description (the two default text search fields) the string "text" AND add every item with a Category that contains the string "editor" AND add every item with a category that contains the string "graphic" AND add all the items with a New Status.
Well it's a draft and it won't be this way but I would like very much to move the search in this direction.
But... the next implementation won't be this one... You'll probably get a feature that alert you when you have some app that need to be updated. It's the first step to a fully unattended auto update feature. So please stay tuned for news
In the meanwhile if anyone has any idea about the future search feature, please be my guest. |

You are right. When the moment arrives, I'll probably do it. Anyway the search must be improved one way or another, because today is unbearable (IMHO). |

Are you talking about the tooltips in the context menu? It's strange because I already customized them with a longer showing time than the Windows standard. Can you tell me how many seconds a tooltip stays on before disappearing in your system? |

It's not customizable and it's exactly the time I set (5000 milliseconds). Well it's not a problem to make it customizable, as anything in SyMenu, but before dedicating my time to this kind of requests, very peculiar indeed, I need to know what the other users think about that. Is there anyone else thinking this could be a useful option? |

Leave it. Try to download the program definitions again and everything should work now. |

Yes you can. Add SyMenu as a normal entry in your start menu targeting the SyMenu.exe executable file. And please report if everything works as you expect. |

The SyMenu purpose is to replace every start menu. What is the point in making it integrable? |

Hmmmm... If you are used to use the mouse you can enable the floating icon, then click on it. It's movable so you can put it wherever you want, even above the taskbar.
If you are more a keyboard guy instead, you can enable the SyMenu shortcuts to open the contextual menu. Have you got any other scenario not covered from the previous two? |

AIMPPortable 4.51.2084 download error

Well the PortableApps CEO, John T. Haller, is not perfectly opened to the rest of the world. It's literally years that he is hindering the use of the "free" programs the volunteers are packaging for him, from third party launchers. Now to download a program from the PA web site you need to put the current date after the link... it's incredible how his intelligence is wasted for.
And I don't even start with the story of the protection the programs acquire when they are packed inside a PAF... the most annoying one is that if you are not the official PA launcher you are not eligible to silently install the PAF program. The silent install is a fundamental feature a launcher has to offer to its users.
What is not so clear to me is if all the volunteers contributing with the PA project are perfectly aware of how much protected the programs they are packaging for PA become... Programs that originally are free and open source, programs packed for free, for a so called "...fully open source and free platform..." (cit..) that become protected and exclusive programs, downloadable and usable from a single launcher.
But, guys, nobody seems to care about that, above all the PA contributors so what can I do? |

edited by VVV_Easy_Symenu on 22/03/2019 You are right. The problem is that if you want to activate the portable mode, you need to use the original installer in unattended mode and I remember that the installer needs administrative privileges... not viable! |

SPS Manager and VirusTotal.com

Usually I don't announce the new feature for the SPS Manager but this time it's a different thing.
In fact I'm putting the finishing touches to the next version, which will introduce the automatic package submission to the VirusTotal.com web site.
Naturally the scan result will be included in the SPS file automatically.
Every SyMenu user will find a new column in the app grid where he could evaluate the reliability level of any programs according to the AV scan result.
SyMenu will be released some weeks later than the SPS Manager, so that the editors will have enough time to updated their programs.
Stay tuned for news! |

Feature Request: Display Location

Interesting thing but I can't see why you need this feature. What is your use case, can you explain it?
BTW in the configuration form you have a sort of this because when you click on a found item in the search bar, the treeview syncs with that item so you can see where it is located.

Feature Request: Display Location

Let's start with some assertions 1) SyMenu can add apps in several ways. You can add an app dragging onto the floating icon. You can add one or more apps from the "Get new apps". They are suites' apps. You can add an app from the configuration form in several way (drag from file system, add from form menu).
2) Liberkey is not SyMenu, SyMenu is not Liberkey. If you ask a feature never tell me "I want that because it's in the other menu". SyMenu is growing following its own way that is a way of consistency! So instead please ask "I want that feature because is organic with the SyMenu philosophy and structure", you have more chance
I don't understand you clearly so I can only imagine what your problem is. With your first question you asked me to be able to locate an app logical position (position inside the SyMenu tree) from the context menu search bar. IMHO is a senseless request because the context menu is built to execute apps, not to manage them. On the other hand the configuration form is built to add, manage, remove apps, so it's correct that inside this form you can have a tool to locate an app logical position. And, guess what, you already have it. Enter the configuration form and press CRTL+S, start to write an app name and it'll appear while you type. Click on it and the treeview will open on that app.
Now, can you explain me better what your use case is? I mean, make an example of what you are not able to do, because I don't understand where the real problem is. |

Wrong Icons after adding apps
GianlucaAdministrator

Can you explain better what a wrong icon is? Is it a strikethrough icon (an icon with a red cross on it)?
If this is the case, I know, thank you. It's a bug born when I introduced the red cross on icon for lost programs. Anyway when you got this situation the workaround is easy. - add one or more programs. A lot of new red crossed icons appear; - press Save button and Reset button. This way you force SyMenu to refresh the situation and it becomes aware of the new programs existence, so it removes the red cross.
It's a simple workaround but I know that it's a bug I have to solve. Anyway it has a very low priority so I don't know when I succeed. |

Symenu slow on even a 6 core 32 gb machine & ssd!

Yes there is.
The problem with your configuration is that SyMenu needs to have all the entries in memory at once. Useless and very heavy.
The right way to manage tons of programs is to create some containers inside the menu and distribute the program items all along them. At that point SyMenu will be able to load only the root elements leaving the subfolders loading for a moment when you really need them. Moreover SyMenu will be able to release the unused memory and it'll become a flash. Granted!
Since you want to have them all, I consider you an expert user, so please, before installing everything RTFM!!! as a power user should always do. And read especially this point: https://www.ugmfree.it/SyMenuManual.aspx#SPSItemLocators
My advise is: delete everything, click the right configuration button (probably the second one: "Position the new installed programs inside some folders named according to their own category") and download them all again. You'll have a menu automatically configured with subcontainer named as the program categories. Then you can rearrange them as you like but you won't be blocked!
And, BTW, when you configured correctly your menu, test it again on you old laptop i5: it'll be a flash all the same |

Yes I'm the SyMenu developer and I strongly appreciate every suggestion coming from users. Well this project is mainly fueled by the users suggestions.
Why isn't this option the default one? Because your scenario is not so common.
Commonly the users do a cherry picking selection instead of grabbing all the programs at once and, if I make a precise selection, it is annoying to have folder categories automatically created from nothing.
Plus the most common scenario is that a user wants to decide by himself the program categorization. I know users that spend literally years perfecting their configuration.
Anyway your experience with this problem is not unique so I have to think some sort of cure. What do you think about a message that alerts the user that it is not recommended to install more than x programs (20? 30?) on the SyMenu root?
Just before the installation I can easily check how many programs already are in the root folder and how many the user is trying to install, plus the currently selected option. If the option is "install them all on the root" the alert pops up and the user can choose to move on or to modify his selection.
BTW if you want to help, be my guest. Please contact me in private and let's see what we can do. |
