Surely it's a simple matter of deleting the apps folder and the entries in SyMenu? Regardless of the apps origins, this will effectively delete anything. |

SyMenu behaviour "Build in updater" apps

It is useful to have the version number as a tooltip, so when the tooltip shows 0.00, it's not very helpful. By adding a checkbox to the config form, this would give users control over it. How about the version file containing text to ignore updates via the sps system? This would need to be written to the file when the checkbox is ticked.
So the version file could remain as is, without the need to use the 0.00 reference for auto updating apps, but when an app does auto update, the file has something written to it that tells the sps system to ignore it. As the version files are zero byte files, it should be quick and easy to flag ones that contain a single word as their size is increased. If a version file is not zero bytes, it is ignored in the update process. Also keep the current sps form option to control this for base users that don't understand what this is about.
Is that idea any good? If you require further clarification please ask, my explanation may not be too good ;-) |

I have certain apps set to use portable folders instead of AppData, etc. An example is ImageLine's MiniHost: USERPROFILE=.\User APPDATA=.\User\AppData ProgramData=.\User\ProgramData ProgramFiles=.\User\ProgramFiles HOMEPATH=.\User
The problem I'm having is that this app, and others with similar config's, are creating new folders and settings at the root of the drive instead of using the apps folder to store these. Is there something wrong with my commands? Perhaps the order is incorrect or something? I have several apps doing this same thing and I'm getting lots of folders created at the root which is unwanted behaviour. Is it possible this is a bug?
Thanks for your help. |

Thanks Gian. Download here: https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?f=1919&t=123031 It's an installer. I used UniExtract then SyMenu's EnvVar's to make it portable I've emailed the xml file containing Process Monitor's report. Unsure what I'm looking for here, sorry. Is there an app that can save a tree list of files? I have several folders and files created by ILMH which is correctly located within the apps folder as performed via SyMenus EnvVar's.
Even though the AppData/Roaming folder is located in the ILMH/User/AppData folder, it's content is what is being recreated in the root of my drive. Should this EnvVar be changed to: APPDATA=.\User\AppData\Roaming\ |

I tried adjusting the EnvVar to: APPDATA=.\User\AppData\Roaming\
But it had no effect.
I ran the app direct and it created folders in C:/.../AppData/Roaming instead of the root of E: edited by sl23 on 05/02/2018
It appears that you need to use the syntax above but importantly, create the folder Roaming inside the AppData folder. So a full path for the variable would be: IL MiniHost/User/AppData/Roaming
Then it is saved correctly in the location specified in the EnvVar.

Sorry, my poor explanation again! Basically, when you specify the EnvVar for APPDATA, as I specified APPDATA=.\User\AppData\Roaming the app looks here but doesn't find the folders. I think this is due to the lack of specifying the \Roaming part of the variable. Even if it is specified, I've found that you need to actually copy/move/create the directory structure and files into .\User\AppData\Roaming EXACTLY as it would be if using the system AppData\Roaming folder. If it doesn't find an existing folder/file structure in your EnvVar's designated folder, it is then created at the root level of the drive which it is installed on.
I have to admit that most apps that do it are the ones I rarely use. When it does this, I delete the root folders as they aren't necessary for repeated use of the app. I will try to take note of which apps do this from now on if you think it would help you, let me know if this is necessary for you to solve the problem.
Thanks |

BTW did you already try with the LOCALAPPDATA redefinition? I wasn't sure exactly what the difference was between this and the other APPDATA variable?
I may have used this but cannot find the apps used on. Doesn't it just save the AppData\Local app folders? Which I couldn't grasp why you had Local but not Roaming? Are these system variables? Isn't Roaming\Appdata a system variable? Should be if Local\Appdata is! Don't understand why it's not included? |

Another app, GlaryUtilities, also has errors. Though I suspect it's app related. Despite setting the EnvVar same as above, Glary refuses to use it and keeps creating new folders in the system AppData\Roaming folder.
All IObit's apps do the same. edited by sl23 on 06/02/2018 |

Interesting explanation, thank you.
I must point out though that Glary does not work that way for me and has never done so on several different PC's with different OS's. Starnge that it works for you?

Show/Hide hidden SyItems

Hi Gian, long time no see! :-) Hope you are well.
I wondered if there were any chance you could add a function similar to the windows Show Hidden Items. But instead of this working on Windows Explorer, it would simply be an option to show or hide the hidden items within SyMenu.
So for example, when items are hidden within the Config form, you would click the notification SyMenu icon or the floating icon. Then navigate to the top entry called SyMenu. Which opens the usual Config, Options, Enable Ext Manager dialogue. An extra item for Show/Hide Hidden Items could be placed here which could work visually in a similar manner to the Enable Ext Manager.
The reason for the request is that I have two SyMenu's, one for ALL apps, the other for most used to keep things minimal on a day to day basis. It would be helpful and less confusing to maintain if there could simply be a switch to remove those items not required regularly.
Hope you like the idea.

Hi Gian, Thank you for taking the time to answer, and for the great and lengthy description
I understand your hesitation, it makes sense why you dislike the idea.
But I love the way you turned a negative into a positive!
I like the idea of profiles, but this introduces an annoyance in my opinion. Maybe you could find a way around it? Liberkey had this option, you could effectively create several menus within the main menu and switch between them. Exactly as you propose. The downside that I found out when trying it out was that I want an easy life!
The issue is that you create your main menu profile 'A' and a secondary profile 'B'. But you can't see both at once without creating second shortcuts in menu B. So when looking for something it can become a chore and becomes messy! I found myself searching to see where shortcuts were and if they existed at all! Yes there's the search function, but I prefer not to use this. Keyboards are cumbersome and slow me down.

An hidden element is an element that, for certain reasons, you don't want to delete but you don't want to see too. That is the very reason for my request
There are some small things that just work in PA.com's menu, and this is one of them. Right click a shortcut in their app and there's the option to show/hide hidden items. If I hid something I put it in a hidden folder so it was out the way when these items were shown. For me, this works. I realise you need to do what's right for the majority, so hopefully there's a way around this problem?
Profiles is a good answer but this requires multiple entries of an app should you require it on more than one profile, there needs to be an easy way to handle this. Maybe make make a switch that allows editing one shortcut with this name to be copied to all shorctcuts with the same name?
I have several apps with different shortcuts due to having different versions. Each has a small difference to denote it's origin or version. example, at the end of all PA.com apps I put an * to let me know which version I am looking at. Firefox is a big issue for me at the moment. I still use v56.0.2 as such I have this as 'Firefox * v56' and the up to date version as just 'Firefox *' as well as the second profile version as 'Firefox * 2'
So even though I have several apps with the same name, the shortcuts differ, so that option would be a good compromise for me. But may not be an option for others, so the ability to switch this 'syncing' of shortcuts off would be an idea.
Thanks for listening |

I've just been sorting out my app list in SyMenu, I found that it would be very helpful to adopt the R-click function to copy the contents of the current index field. Also, maybe change the Visit Website link to a button? |

Sorry. for example, in the config form it has button to find icon, locate the app, open the description, etc.
I propose to add a right click function to copy whichever of these is clicked on so as to copy the relevant info to the clipboard. Copy app/icon paths, copy the description, copy the URL, version number, even environment variables.
I've had to do a lot of copying from one SyItem to another so the quick access to copy via a R-click on a button would be a great time saver.
Hope that's a little clearer now |

Personally, for me? No. I don't sit in front of my keyboard and use it almost always for writing emails, posts and such. It isn't an extension for PC functionality for me. I'd say around 90% of my PC usage involves controlling it via mouse.
I understand if you do not want to devote time to enhancing this, but I would still stick by my request. It's your baby, your decision But I would much prefer mouse control.
Also, the drag drop seems to be for adding files to SyMenu. It's not for copying data from one item to another as is my case at the moment. For this I am having to click on one SyItem copy the website field by selecting and copying then pasting to another field, then doing the same process for Descriptions and EnvVar. if there were buttons that could be right clicked to copy the relevant fields it would be so much quicker.
You may ask why I am doing this, essentially I am archiving around 400 apps that are unused. Stuff that is wanted but only used on very rare occasions. Some are backups for old apps or apps no longer updated. So these are now just RAR files instead of folders with app files in. I've saved 5GB of disk space doing this!!! So after I create a RAR file of an apps folder, delete the folder, add the new shortcut of the RAR file, I then need to copy descriptions, URL's, EnvVar notes, and version numbers to the new RAR shortcuts for future reference.
As you can see this is a slower process than simply clicking a button to copy the data, especially when you consider that I have archived around 400 apps!
I'll keep my fingers crossed

No not a new entry but if you look at an entry in the config form there are buttons on the right hand side of the fields for Program, Path, Icon Path, and Description. I propose you add a further button to replace the text for Visit Website first, then add the R-click=Copy text to every button mentioned above, and maybe to other useful fields too, like EnvVar.
I am finding it common practise having to copy these fields to paste to other SyItems.

My apologies, I didn't know that you could R-click a field to select all text! That's solved the issue, thanks. This doesn't work for the description though. Could that be changed so R-click the description field highlights all text and shows the context menu?
I wasn't requesting changing the URL, just to change from the 'Visit Website' text that appears when a link is found to a button. But if you have reason to keep the text, then that's ok. That's just a cosmetic thing anyway.
Thanks Gian |
