Win10 Defender reports Symenu.exe as a trojan

Hi guys.
This false positive issue is totally crazy.
I've just recompiled the same exactly code for the 5.04 and released it again to the web site and incredibly the VirusTotal report is now completely ok:
https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/ce7738efc9ba1d4a67e0c1d1f4e587278a2576802f739b6ab3c9740157308bf5/analysis/
My guess is that in some days the AV software start again to consider SyMenu the most wanted threat on earth and put it in their blacklists. Guys it's a problem for conspiracy fans here... or for AV experts. I've tried to ask for tips to some AV support contacts but it seems they have better things to do. Indeed me too. So let's see the next evolution and please give me any suggestion to workaround this problem.
Thanks! |

Hi my friend.
Report the false positive to any AV on Earth is totally senseless and it takes too much time. So I took another way.

If necessary I'm ready to release a new version daily! Always the same SyMenu version indeed but if the AV work this way I'm ready to workaroud them all... |

Not at all. The problem started with version 5.03 and I didn't introduce anything suspect in that version.
I'm enquiring some AV to understand which particular byte sequence is activating the alert. From a byte sequence I can reverse engineer my software to understand which part of the source code is responsible for that. But I strongly doubt that someone will reply. |

As I previously posted you can freely work with symlinks but forget to see this option natively included in SyMenu.
Symlinks are very dangerous for normal users because you can easily lose control of your folders. Symlinks are not shortcuts and the Windows users are used to the latter ones. I know that Linux is strongly based on mount points but the Linux users are really different than the Windows ones... well don't troll me now! I'm a Windows user too :-)
The second reason for not natively use symlinks in SyMenu is that you completely lose the portability of your programs.
So use symlinks in anyway you like but you won't have it in SyMenu and you will have no support for bugs due to symlinks. |

Wow... your script is a clear demonstration that the wildcards in the scripting engine are absolutely necessary. And thinking about the update process we are lucky that at least the RenFile and CopyFile work in overwrite mode... otherwise you need to delete any previous file too.
I have to deeply think to a smart resolution for this occurrences. |

Thank you yill.
The spreading of SyMenu is only one of the task I have to take care of, but naturally there is always room to improve even a simple activity like this... I'm so engaged with the developing and the SPS maintaining and I can't be everywhere.
Thanks to my adorable wife we finally have some social channel too https://www.facebook.com/symenu https://www.linkedin.com/company/symenu Anyway outside the official channels I'm very confident that the SyMenu users could be the best advertising in the world, so feel free to spread the world by yourself too, we'd strongly appreaciate your help edited by Gianluca on 18/09/2016 |

Hi lupusbalo. Your schema for importing programs and configurations from other platforms, could be automated and this definitively should be a job for a plugin because, you know, SyMenu supports a sort of plugin system and I can't write a feature for a once-in-your-life activity. If someone out there wants to try to write a plugin that imports the configuration from third party software, be my guest. I'm very supportive in these situations |

You are right. CopyFile will be released with the SPS Builder 1.17. When I introduce a new feature I usually grant SyMenu some days to spread among the users and then I release the SPS Builder. Otherwise they risk to find an SPS with a CopyFile instruction with an old SyMenu that can't understand what this command is for.
CopyDir can be a nice addition. I'll think about it. Thanks. edited by Gianluca on 26/09/2016 |

Guys... now you understand what is my level of caos in this period Yes I confirm the SPS Builder 1.17 will introduce the CopyDir feature. SyMenu 5.05 is already compatible with CopyDir instead. CopyFile is here from the start. Sorry! |

Lucky me because I understood nothing about your question
So you are using the SyMenu Published App Track, aren't you? It is really important that you give some feedback directly to the author or through the forum special thread http://www.ugmfree.it/Forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=450 The application is in germinal phase, and you help is precious. |

Hooray VVV_Easy_Symenu. The plugin works like a charm. You did a really great job!
What do you think if I add this thread as a new FAQ here? http://www.ugmfree.it/SyMenuSPSBuilder.aspx So it will be officially integrated in the procedure to maintain the SPS.
A suggestion for you. The download link should be in the first post to find it immediately. Read this one to have a reference (http://www.ugmfree.it/Forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=85)
Another proposal. Why don't you include the exe launcher too? In this way the plugin can work along with SyMenu or stand alone too. Think about that.
Thank you very much again for your terrific work!

Temp Drive fills up, no more space

I will surely clean up the temp folder better than I already do today.
Anyway as a temporary workaround please use the Windows disk cleanup tool that can empty your temp folder.
You can even create a SyMenu autoexec on close task to automatically execute the clean up. This is the procedure in detail: - Create an empty SyProgram item and call it Disk Cleanup - Point it to the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\cleanmgr.exe - Check the flag in the autoexec on close checkbox - Enable autoexec on closing in SyMenu Options - Events.
In this way you can clean you temp folder whenever SyMenu quits. If you prefer the disk cleanup runs in unattended mode follow the instruction available in this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/253597 |

PS Could you add toggle de/select all functionality to the getapps window cascade menu icon on column header. Sure I can. Anyway you know that you can use the SHIFT modifier to select more than one checkbox at the time, do you?
Check the fist checkbox on the top, then scroll until the end, and check the last checkbox on the bottom pressing the SHIFT key. |

During Green Blinking Light, SyMenu Unresponsive

useroftech wrote:
What does the blinking green light indicate? Is there any way around this?
The blinking green light indicates that SyMenu is loading its items from the configuration files to its memory, so it means "I'm working on the disk". Yes you can easily workaround this issue using a fastest disk/USB drive. In case you are talking about a not removable installation you can use a fastest disk only for SyMenu itself and its files (about 10MB) and locate its controlled programs in another disk if disk space is a problem.
But the real question is: why SyMenu needs to reload its items so frequently? When I create SyMenu I was worried about the memory occupation. SyMenu is a particular program that need to stay active but for the majority of time does nothing. It is not correct that this kind of program reserves a large slice of memory for itself when it does nothing, so I adopted some dirty tricks to unload the memory during its inactivity leaving a small RAM footprint. I think that under Windows 10 this behavior creates some problems when you leave SyMenu active for a while. With the term "for a while" I intend entire days in a row. If your disk is not so fast and if you leave SyMenu active "for a while", simply shut it down and relaunch it and the problem will solve by itself. |

The only way to make it disappears is restarting SyMenu. The fastest way to make it reappears is opening and closing the configuration form several times. In this way you increase the memory overload... Our simply let it runs for some days. |

Mouse Wheel Scroll for Menus
GianlucaAdministrator

I've never supported the mouse wheel so you can do nothing to workaround this issue but I will add this request in the TODO list. I hope to solve that in one of the next versions.
In the meanwhile you can organize your containers to have less programs inside. The scrolling is needed when you have a program list that can't be contained inside your screen. I don't think that such an organization could help you a lot in finding your preferred program. So you can split them up and work on hierarchical containers instead. |

FreeFileSync

Sure there is. FreeFileSync is advisedly built to avoid its launch from a third party application. This is the reason for which I suggested the workaround. Read this topic started more than two years ago by John Haller (yes portableapps has the same problem with FFS).
I include in the SyMenu suite only programs that want to spread and not programs that want to be self-referential and FreeFileSync seems to belong to the second family.
And... FFS is not the best synch software. I strongly prefer the more flexible approach of Total Commander or Unreal Commander that is already included in the SyMenu Suite. |

Total commander is not available in the SyMenu suite because it is shareware while Unreal Commander is available because it's freeware. Anyway the synchronization tool is perfectly identical among the two. |
