He handed the source code over to me, but unfortunately mrx gave up because PAT is too complex and not very well written, so it’s too steep a project to start with.

I can’t take it on myself either, so I’m still waiting for someone new who might want to help with this project. In my opinion it’s a really interesting topic, and there’s room for tons of improvement. If I weren’t so overloaded, I’d be happy to work on it myself.

Let me recap everything:
- PAT needs to be updated: user agent, UI typos, architecture (x86 → x64)
- PAT should be converted from its current language (VB.NET) to a more standard one (C#)
- There’s plenty of room to improve the program’s functionality as well
- We need a developer, even a young one, because I can’t manage a new project but I can supervise one

For SyMenu and SPS Builder I use an old FF user agent and a recent Wget user agent.
Usually there's no problem downloading anything with any kind of user agent unless it's too old but effectively you can have problems even with a recent user agent using SyMenu Published App Track (PAT) that presents itself as a sort of browser.

Plus the part where you hacked PAT is interesting but quite useless.

If I was in your shoes I'd try to ask the author the source code. If he still has it, I guess he will give it to you with zero problems. When you have the source code it's easier to make any modification and it could be a good thing to implement new features too. What about a rolling user agent? So when you don't succeed in downloading a page with the first one you can try the second and third ones.
And even if VVV_Easy_Symenu has no more the source code, under his permission, you can decompile the exe and have the source again. I'm quite an expert with this kind of thing and I can help you.

Hi, it's me again.

The user agent string of SyMenu Published App Track is already quite old, which is why sourceforge.net has not been delivering web pages to SyMenu Published App Track for some time.

To work around the problem, I used a hex editor to change the string in the EXE file. Since then, everything has been working as usual again. Even a little better: some download sources were previously unavailable. If you are interested, you can download the manipulated EXE file below.

The old strings
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:50.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/50.0
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

PAT needs a certain minimum desktop resolution at every startup to build the GUI correctly. In my tests it was 1440x900. The display of my notebook is only 1366x768 and the result looks like the attached screenshot.

I almost went crazy before I got the idea to test PAT on my external monitor. The GUI is displayed correctly and can now be enlarged and also reduced to any size.

It's not on PAT but it's on the SPS Builder.
PAT could track any SPS opened from inside itself but the problem here is that SPS Builder is a completely separate software and it could be opened by the user in a separate context. So PAT can't have a complete view of all the SPS currently opened in several SPS Builder instances.

IMHO the utility to have multiple SPS Builder instances at the same time is terrific. When I update my suite I usually open three SPS Builder and while one is downloading and installing a program, I work with another instance. Or when I have to test a x86 and x64 versions I work with both, while the third instance is working on something else. I agree when VVV_Easy_Symenu tells that SPS is a technology for advanced users only, anyway, implementing a feature that checks any other SPS Builder instance and alerts if the same SPS is opened somewhere else is possible and I will do at sometimes.

I see another problem instead.
PAT works off line reading the SyMenu Suite _Cache folder, while the most correct way to work would be reading the SPS online. But UGM for first is not ready for this kind of interaction.
So my request is that when PAT opens you could check the _Cache content and if the marker file is older than one hour, alert the user to update it.
It helps a lot to maintain the off line files aligned with the online ones.

  • same SPS file open twice - the danger here though is that you save one instance to UGM, leave the two open and work on more then forget which of the two is saved. If you save the wrong one to UGM then you undo your work. I suppose the sensible thing to do is to close both and reopen from UGM, but I think there should be a limitation.
  • Auto load track URL - sorry, I realised my error here. But I thought perhaps you could use the download link from SPS files, then remove the part that contains the actual ***.exe/***.zip/***.file? Don't know if that is possible, just an idea. Not really that important, probably, but may be worth a look?
  • Context menu in webpage - Thanks, I knew about the shortcuts, just that some of us prefer the mouse to fiddly keys! ;-)

  • EDIT 2: You have detected some errors. Thank you very much, you are a very good beta tester. I want change the Edit Form to allow it several instances and not navigate between the selected items. EDIT 1:
  • How is SPS PAT calling the SPS Builder? Is it direct or via SyMenu?
    It's just that I would prefer only a single instance to save having to close all those windows! Is that possible?
    If called via SyMenu, then SyMenu can limit to single instance, this would allow it to be user defined rather than set in stone.
    If called directly, can you change it?

  • It is possible to open more than one instance of the same SPS file, not really a good idea.

  • I've also noticed that you can open an SPS via a double click of either the left or right mouse buttons.
    Would it be possible to have Left Double Click to open in SPS Builder and Right Double Click to Edit Selected, or vice versa?
    Or maybe a context menu might be a better solution, it would allow for future expansion?

  • Would it be possible to auto load the Track URL straight from the relevant SPS files?
    Maybe too much to ask? Just helps speed up the process.

  • Could you add a context menu for copy/paste in the webpage section?

Just a few ideas for you to peruse, hope the feedback isn't too harsh, it's not meant that way. I hope to help improve the app. I understand if you feel some things aren't worth the hassle to implement, just some ideas that's all.

When resizing the Edit Track window from the right hand edge, it moves the bottom four buttons relative to the right hand edge. But the search field stays in place. So making the window smaller causes the buttons on the bottom left to disappear and the two bottom right buttons move left and cover up the search field.
I'm on windows 10 if that makes a difference? I noticed the help screen has different buttons so perhaps you're on an older OS?

Maybe you could reduce the button widths, no need for them to be so wide?
Perhaps have a toolbar at top of window?
Or maybe add these options to a central context menu somehow?

Even though some bugs exist, you've done a great job with this and I for one am very grateful, so, thank you for this great addition.

Your b) solution can absolutely work.
As sl23 says it's a matter of changing a bit of fields even in a very old file.
Well the a) solution will be the more logical one because it is always a danger to change an outdated SPS but, if you work with PAT (BTW nice acronym) the way it's thought, you should always point to the _Cache folder under the SyMenu control and there you can't find a year old file.

I'm afraid you are being too literal with my post about the plugin path.
I was posting from my phone so couldn't remember the pathname perfectly. But it is the default path.

Column selection can be handy but if it's too much hassle, then don't worry about that.

Double clicking to open sps builder would be a great help. Either you open an sps from a users cloud or from the cache folder is irrelevant. Either would give the sps file. It shouldn't matter if you loaded am out of date file a year old, you still should only need to change 4 sections of it.

1) "Problems using the plugin version": You write that your folder is symenu/plugins/ but the standart SyMenu folder is /Plugin (upper case and not plural) (see Gian topic Plugin summary) so the script no detected the folder but the plugin is detected by SyMenu. So, question for Gian ¿what names are allowed for the SyMenu pluging folder? I can adapt the program to all possibilities.
2) "allow selection of columns to show/hide": Well, I add the request to the TODO list but I think that is complicated to program and it must be associated to a config file. BTW I haven't need it never.
3) "the ability to double click on an apps name in the list to open that sps in the SPS Builder app": This is a very good idea, is a normal use when a updated is detected. I think to ways of do it:
a) Edit with SPS Builder downloading from UGM: Is the best one but I think that it's very complicated to synchronize the two apps: get the username and the password, etc.
b) Edit the local sps copy: It's a copy but is the same that use SysAppTrack and it very easy to pass the file path to SyMenu Builder in an argument (in fact, I tried an ¡it seems works! ¡Gian had already anticipated it!) Another request of value would be to allow the default track file to be changed to a user specified one. Or open last used file.

On another note, it may well be far superior way of working to allow sps to be fully edited via this plugin/app. If the above request is possible, double click a name to open in sps builder, perhaps the way forward would be to integrate the two apps more thoroughly. I realise this is probably a major task, but would ultimately make the whole sps process easier to create, manage and update. Be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

Another proposal. Why don't you include the exe launcher too? In this way the plugin can work along with SyMenu or stand alone too. Think about that.

Description
One of the tasks of the SPS publisher app is to verify the app updates.
This can be done quickly by monitoring changes of the ChangeLog page or the download links page with any program.
Inspired in WebMon (screenshots) by Colin Markwell, with this plugin you can easy track your SPS published apps.
1) The plugin collects your SPS published apps from the SyMenuSuite\_Cache folder.
2) In the plugin you can write:
• Your own Track URL (for instance to the ChangeLog page),
• The Start and Stop string of your track block
3) The plugin hashes the Track Block in order to save the web "photo"
4) In Track mode, it verify:
• The Track hashes modification(¿Alert of app update?)
• The download url and size (¿Is your published app ok?)

Nowadays, the web page protections make difficult a 100% sure verification, but I only have found 1% of false detection even in https protocol.
And more ...., if you set empty the publisher name, you can get all the SPS Suite and sort by the creation an modification file dates.
By default, it charge my own SPS Published list as example.
